Nacho vs Dwight Schrute
Who is the perfect employee?
In episode 14 of season 3 of The Office, Michael Scott walks around the desks and notices some of the plants are dying. Bewildered, he wonders why this might be happenning.
Not coincidentally, at the same time, Dwight Schrute, who had quit his job at Dunder Mufflin just prior, was working at Staples. As it was pointed out to Michael by the staff, Dwight was the only reason those plants kept living. He’s the only person who gave a damn about those plants — nurturing them and watering them when needed.
Was Dwight ever asked to water those plants? Absolutely not. Was it part of his job description? Hell no. Did Dwight ever care about getting recognition for keeping those plants alive? Fuck that. Dwight watered those plants because he gets shit done and doesn’t wait around for you or anyone else to tell him it needs to get done.
That’s Nacho.
Nacho showed up every day, from 2008 (in the academy) all the way up until today. He bought in to the greater good that is Real Madrid. He didn’t care what he was asked to do or not to do. He just showed up, played whatever position the team required of him, and delivered. No questions asked. No limelight needed.
"How would I describe myself?” Dwight asked in that aforementioned episode. “Three words. Hard-working. Alpha male. Jackhammer. Merciless. Insatiable."
And that’s where Nacho Fernandez differs from Dwight Schrute. What kind of lunatic actually announces himself as an alpha male? Nacho didn’t need to tell anyone he was an alpha male, he just showed us. Less words, more action. He didn’t announce to us he was going to lock up Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland in big Champions League games.
He. Just. Did. It:
Nacho is the definition of success. He woke up every day doing what he loved, at the club he loved. He won more trophies than everyone, played with dozens of legends, was coached by some of the greatest managers ever, has a beautiful family, and always bought in to the greater good.
We always need a Nacho.
The club will miss him.
